Swamp Sistas is a grassroots movement with a dual passion for the arts and community activism. Established in 2010 by singer/songwriter Beth McKee as a way to build community and support for female artists, the group morphed into a diverse, multi-generational network of women with varying backgrounds and career paths. Then it found a mission.
McKee wanted the group to play a positive role in the community while promoting her music and that of her female songwriting peers. She remembered the “La La’s” of New Orleans, where she lived early in her career. La La’s are Creole soirées where musicians gather, friends dance, and everyone gives what they can for a common cause. McKee emulated those events and has since held more than a dozen La La’s, raising nearly $250,000 for local charities. The Swamp Sistas La La Foundation continues to seek creative ways to do good, build community, and support artists.
In 2019, the Swamp Sistas La La Foundation became a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization. In 2020, unable to hold in-person events due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the group adapted by hosting online presentations and a virtual Swamp Sistas La La to help Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida fight childhood hunger.
By 2022, the foundation had expanded its mission to include artists from marginalized populations. It now actively recruits and shines its spotlight not just on women but on BIPOC, LGTBQ+, and other historically suppressed artists.
