n. \ˈswȯmp ˈsis·tahz\ a group of women who love good music, good food and doing good for others
We are the Swamp Sistas, brainchild of musician Beth McKee, a Mississippi native who has dwelled in Louisiana, Texas, North Carolina and currently calls Florida home. Swamp Sistas was born on Nov. 26, 2010, conceived as a way to connect the women Beth met while touring the southeastern United States promoting her CD of Bobby Charles tunes entitled I’m That Way. She inspired us and we, in turn, inspired her! She decided to introduce us all to each other by forming a group on Facebook and calling it Swamp Sistas.
Swamp Sistas rapidly evolved into a grassroots e-community that the Orlando Sentinel defined as “a network of skills and support that goes beyond the music.” The Swamp Sistas’ origins are the American south, but we warmly embrace and seek women from all over and from every walk of life. We have so much to learn from each other and diversity is our friend!
The group continued to inspire Beth during the writing and recording of her 2012 album Next To Nowhere and sparked her songwriting voice and musical path. In 2012 Beth decided to extend our movement into the “real” world. With Beth’s help, we started hosting events called La Las. “La La” is an old Creole term for a party with a purpose and at Swamp Sista La Las we gather with friends and family to celebrate Southern-inspired music, food and art, all while raising money and/or awareness for various community organizations and issues. Our mission is to have fun and help out all at the same time.
If you enjoy Facebook and are female, we hope you will join in our conversation and invite others to be a part of this soulful and ever expanding community. It’s as easy a visiting the Swamp Sistas group page on Facebook and asking to join. We’d be thrilled to have you. The group page is for women only, but the Swamp Sista “friends and fans” page is open for all to enjoy, so we hope you’ll take a sec to hop over there and give us a “like” and a “share.
La La Love,
The Swamp Sistas
